Harvest of Giant Pacific Octopus prohibited in Puget sound

New rules prohibits the recreational harvest of giant Pacific octopuses at seven popular scuba diving sites in Puget Sound.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission, which sets policy for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) called for a review of the octopus rules after the legal harvest of a giant Pacific octopus by a scuba diver near Alki Point in Seattle sparked a public outcry.

The strong negative reaction from the public and the dive community prompted the department to look at options for banning the harvest of these octopuses.

The seven new protected sites are:

Redondo Beach
Three Tree Point North
Seacrest Park Coves 1, 2 and 3 (excluding fishing pier)
Les Davis
Alki Beach Junk Yard
Days Island Wall
Deception Pass
